Sooooo….. Why not become an author?

become an author

jennahameenahhow i foundmnuslijuwsaidah

Just a few sister authors that inspire me!

Here are just a few amazing benefits of becoming and author!

  1. You inspire others: People live to hear stories of tragedy to triumph. You unconsciously give them permission to break the cycle of madness in their life and finally begin reclaiming themselves for a better life.
  2. You put Bling on your personal brand: Your book acts as an ad for your personal brand.  It’s the bling for your brand!
  3. Instant credibility almost all of the time: People dig authors and trust them.
  4. Your book is like content marketing on instant: Digital marketers say that content marketing is one of the best ways to attract traffic. Guess what? Your book is the content!
  5. People don’t just throw away books: People keep books! They like to have a book to read or refer to for specific information on hand. Your book now re-markets at no extra cost!
  6. Opportunities for Speaking Engagements: Your book can open up opportunities for you in the form of speaking engagements. You are viewed as the expert so they want to hear from you!
  7. Doing business just becomes easier now: Sending a copy of your book to a perspective client can “break the ice” when you are negotiating business. Make sure to autograph it!
  8. Press & Media Coverage: Comments from experts are what journalists look for when writing about a hot industry topic. You are basically perceived as the expert so they will need you. Authors are automatically perceived as experts!
  9. The One Investment That Pays You Back Over and Over: It does cost time and money to get your book published but it’s the best investment with the best return. Your bank account gets fat and opportunities start flowing like a stream. Sleep Dollars is the name I give it!

7 Steps to Completing What You Start

mmpermission2win book coverIf you are like I was about 5 years ago and still a a work in progress, you start hundreds of projects and never finish any of them. You become frustrated and just hopeless!  I remember when I said I was going to write 3 books and could hardly start writing one to only find myself 5 years later actually completing it and publishing it! Alhamdulilah(All Praise is Due to Allah) This was such a relief after having picked up the manuscript over a thousand times only to put it down just as many times. Does this sound like you? You don’t have to continue feeling overwhelmed because there are proven ways to help you out of this frustrating cycle. Allow me to share what helped me to transition into starting and finishing whatever project or task I have on my plate. Here are 7 steps to completing what you start.

Hold on because the first thing you should know is that the trick to finishing what you start is actually about how you start as opposed to the fact that you have kids demanding your attention and a ton of mom and wife duties plus everything else in between! I know you are saying “what in the world”? But yes it really is all min how you start.  Now let me proceed with the 7 steps!

  1. Make the decision to actually finish before you even get started! Make a dua(short supplication) to Allah(God) asking Him to keep you guided and on track! (Ex: In 2014 after divorce from my husband of 15 years I finally made the comittment to Just Do It! I asked Allah to keep me on track and to never allow me to give up!)
  2. Create an actionable plan. A plan without action is a plan to fail or better yet just a party in your own head! Don’t waste all that time brainstorming and creating ways to reach your goal just to do nothing. It’s a great dis service to your self and to those whom you could be serving with your finished product!(Ex: I hired a writing coach since this was part of the plan.  She helped me put together a writing plan and gave tremendous support to me in my times of hopelessness. You can find her on Facebook at Subhanah Wahhaj. She is the author of  the phenomenal book “How I Found Myself in Egypt”, the CEO of a self publishing company called “The Write Patch”, and the daughter of Imam, Siraj Wahhaj of Masjid At Taqwa in Brooklyn, New York)
  3. Identify and Avoid distractions. You simply have to know that as a Boss Mom you will face many distractions but the key to avoiding them is to identify what they are , plan how you will manage it, and schedule a specific time when you can work on your task or project. You almost always have to be flexible but make sure that you discuss your schedule with your children if they are old enough to understand so that they can at least accept your turn-downs to their requests temporarily with some ease.  For mommies with little ones I suggest you take 15 minute blocks of time and do as much as you can until the timer runs out. (Ex: I had children ages 7-14 so it was just a matter of me discussing my plan to write a book and that at certain times they could not bother me unless it was an emergency. If they really wanted my attention but it was not an emergency I asked them to write it down and put it in my basket on top of my desk. Oh my! Sometimes I had to stop suddenly if they were arguing and fighting with each other and that would just make me put it away and com back when things cooled down. You know what it’s like right?smile!
  4. Get started and don’t attach yourself to the outcome! Embrace the detours and bumps and enjoy the process! Everything will not go as planned or it will then when you get to the end something else will happen. Just know that attaching yourself to the outcome is a huge waste of time because you just don’t have control over that part, only Allah does!(Ex: I had to just get started without looking back and despite all my fears! On day 1 and part of day 2 I wrote the objective of my book, who my target audience was going to be, and my outline)
  5. Define the time in which you want to finish what you start. Attach a date to the plans in step 2. Without a date I have to say you are just gonna keep ending up where you started so it’s like you never even started at all or you just keep starting over driving yourself insane! Who wants a headache?(Ex: I planned to have the objective and outline done within 3 days so I plugged in the date 3 days from when I started)
  6. Complete as opposed to finish by sharing your journey, saving your work for future use, and giving back. I know that once you write a book it’s so rewarding to share and help others to do the same!  It’s a product that pays you over and over without any extra effort and gives a solution to your ideal readers! I don’t recommend that you just finish something to say you finished it because the thought of completing any other project will appear as a nightmare to you. You want to enjoy the process so that you don’t choose giving up as an option when starting your next project. Keep the momentum rolling as much as you can. (Ex: Now that I have completed my book and published it I am sharing it and some of what happened in my journey, as planned, with the world through podcasts, social media, workshops etc… I really ended up enjoying the process but I will be real with you…I had to arrive at this mindset by resetting my thoughts about my journey since I was also going through a personal healing journey. I don’t recommend you do the same! When you start any project self care should be #1 on your list of actionable plans since you need you to complete your project or task) Click here to purchase Motivated Muslimah:Permission to Win and start your journey to become the best you!
  7. Celebrate your success! A small reward for yourself(manicure, pedicure, take a walk etc…) I have not figured out this one yet but it is very important!

HB’s Tips and Quotes for Tuesday

As women in business we often find ourselves struggling to keep personal life, family life and business life in balance. We are the “Asiyyah of all trades.” Raising children, keeping the household in order, keeping up with our marital duties, keeping up with our spiritual duties, working, running a business, going to school, spending “Me” time to renew ourselves, and spending time with our loved ones and friends can be such a struggle to balance.

As a life coach and business coach for women I often hear stories that make me cringe at the thought that I can never really help them get it together. The only thing I can do is provide proven techniques/tools, motivation, encouragement, and an ear without judgement when they are struggling to achieve their goals. God is in control ultimately and that is what I make a point of to each and every one of my clients. I remind them that they have limited control and that attaching themselves to a desired outcome will leave them frustrated when things do not go as planned.  I make sure to tell them that all they need to do is do their part, do the best that they can do, and God takes care of the outcome.

Particularly, in the area of business, women find themselves going nuts and losing much needed sleep at the thought that things are just never going to go right after an unplanned event causes an obstacle in their business. it just throws everything else off. They end up spending more time trying to prevent or fix the problem and less time with family and friends and even paying attention to themselves for fear of never getting things back on track in their business. I remind them that sometimes obstacles happen for good things to take place but more importantly they made need to take a break away from it all to come back rejuvenated and with a fresh mind. Neglecting everything else to get one area of your life in order can cause more disaster than expected. This work/life balance ordeal is pretty hard and we all must work day by day because it is not something you can just plan and hope to make it work only one time. You have to keep trying different methods until you find what works best for you.

Andrea Jung , CEO of Avon, says “Sometimes as a leader of a growing organization you have to fire yourself on Friday and hire yourself on Monday with fresh eyes.” I believe this is true in business but much more true to expand this thought for other areas of your life as well for a balanced effect!

My dear beloveds it would be such a pleasure to hear more stories of women taking a break from all they do daily to unwind and come back renewed! I speak to myself first!

Leaving The J.O.B. To Build Their Own Biz Dreams

(Photo:  ICNA MAS Convention 2014 Baltimore, Maryland-There were many women-owned businesses in the vending area!)

Women have been leaving their J.O.B.’s(Just Over Broke) to start their own businesses faster and faster over the last 10 or so years. We want to spend more time with our families! We are simply tired of having to wake up before the birds chirp and rush to the “plantation fields” where the employers tell us when to eat, take a break and go on vacation. Making ends meet is no longer our cry! We are talking about spending more time with family/spouses, getting closer to God, having time to spend with our friends, earning money on our own terms, finding our passion or life purpose, doing more to help others in society to make the world a better place, and building a better village to raise our children.

If you are a woman and any of this resonates with you , you may want to stop and think for just a few minutes about your current circumstances. Are you working a 9 to 5 with hopes that just one day you will never have to work for any one else because you hate it so much but are only in it to pay bills? ….. I thought so! I too lived that kind of life and it was a tough decision to make starting my own business for fear of losing SECURITY!!! I was wondering how I would even pay a bill if I did not have a paycheck in hand every Friday or every other Friday! This thought process was truly giving me a headache. I just knew I did not like someone having so much control over me to the point where I would compromise all my beliefs and values just to get a DOLLAR!!

“Verily Allah provides sustenance to whom He wills without measure.”-  Surah al-Imran: 37

The way I saw it was that if God is our provider and He says that He gives provision to whom He wills without measure then my provision does not depend on whether I continue to stay at a job that stresses me out daily or quit! What I do realize is that everyone on the face of the Earth was born with a purpose and a gift(s) and we are given so much yet we take it for granted. God has already set your provision so really there isn’t anything to lose ,rather, you have to find out what you can do with the gifts God has given you to make an honest living. Just like the owner or president of the company that you work for had a vision to provide the best product/service to people in their own unique way and has built a team of top level executives to carry out their mission  …SO CAN YOU!!!  Yes it takes money to make money but you have got to start building towards your vision everyday that you live even if its just 5 minutes a day!

If you want to really start your own business and get out of the 9 to 5 rat race , READ ON!!! Start using your current situation as an opportunity to gain free education while getting paid for it!!! Take what you need, leave the rest and get paid is the new “earn while you learn” technique, because if you do it right nobody even knows what you are doing but you! Don’t waste time complaining but start studying the company’s structure. Learn how your position contributes to it instead of just clocking in and dreading the day ahead of you waiting till time to clock out. You need what they have because just about every business needs close to the same thing. Most often its called Core Values, Mission, and Vision. Focus on one core value and start measuring their level of deliverance in products/services regards to how they are meeting or not meeting it. Take notice to how they use their mission to drive their vision.

You don’t have time to worry about all the reasons you hate your job because complaining will leave you sitting in the same position year after year, whether it is at that job or at someplace else. If you truly want to have a business of your own you have got to learn the art of leveraging and learning on an ongoing basis. Build your relationships with people who have the same mindset and get out of the company of people who just don’t want to change their circumstance but rather complain everyday and accept it!

If you want to begin moving in the direction of earning money own your own terms and living your life in more happier and peaceful way spending more time with family and doing the things you love most then you have got to remove the one obstacle that stands in the way! That’s YOU!!!! You have got to want it bad enough and have to be willing to do whatever it takes because you only have something to GAIN. If you took a leap from whatever your circumstance is now, the difference would not be a loss if nothing changed because you never lost anything! You will probably just go back to whatever you were doing or be in the same circumstance you were in or edging, and that would be the same thing! Why not stick with the bumps in the road, getting stronger and more focused with each one, allowing change to give you an upgrade in exchange for your time and commitment!

Have you already started a business and are just searching for ways to stay inspired, motivated, and on top as you move forward?

Are you just stuck trying to decide if starting a business is the right thing to do right now?

Are you looking for an opportunity that would allow you to earn money on your own terms ?

Did you answer yes to any of these questions?

Great! I want to personally invite you to a VIP conference, with my business partners and I ,COMING SOON IN THE FALL OF 2014! You will have the opportunity to discuss some of your concerns and challenges regarding entrepreneurship and learn about ways to make a change to your current financial circumstance. Face Your Fears!

If you’re ever out camping or just exploring the woods in the country and you come across Mr. grizzly bear, here are two things you absolutely never want to do:

1.Run away as fast as you can

2.Climb a tree

Ok you’re probably thinking, “so what in the world should I do?”lol Well here is what you do:

1.STAND YOUR GROUND and DON’T TURN AROUND!!!

Even if it begins to chase after you.

STAND TALL AND DON’T BACK DOWN!

If you attempt to run, it will chase you, catch you, and make you the main course at meal time!

What has all of this got to do with fear, you ask?

Well it has everything to do with fear.

We all have something that we’re afraid of.

I’m not  only talking about heights or creepy crawling insects and spiders!

I’m talking about things like the fear of failure or rejection.

I’m talking about the insecurities that we all have within us.

I’m talking about having our lives governed by how others think of us.

I’m talking about our irrational fears that cause us to continuously run away from all aspects in life.

But here’s what you must come to know.

Your fears chase after you when you run, just like Mr. grizzly bear.

They hunt you down and they taunt you.

They cause you to loose sleep at night.

They won’t back down.

Here is what you do:

Since your fears are like Mr. Grizzly Bear, here is what you want to do for sure:

Stand your ground and face your fears, they will lose their power and no longer have control over you.

They will back down leaving you to wonder why you were so afraid to face them.

With Success,

Walida
